Description
This is an antique Japanese mid Taisho Era (c. 1920's) chabako (tansu chest for
Chado
tea ceremony)
complete
with mizusashi (lidded water container), hand pounded copper ochakoboshi, natsume, futaoki, and a nice chawan tea bowl in a an orange peel finish.
Within the chabako there are 4 removable shelves as well as a drawer on top (see pictures 3 & 8). It is made completely out of
kiri
(paulownia) wood. It has a bronze handle on the top (see picture 6) which is a secure way to transport it even fully loaded.
The front lid lifts easily out of a grooved area on the front of the box. The box is made of light weight
kiri
(paulownia) and has a century old warm patina. Made in the tradition of old world craftsmanship with wooden pinned lap joints.
Other than an aged patina and very minor signs of past use, this chabako (tea tansu) remain in
fine condition.
All pieces are in very good condition. It measures 7" wide by 21" high by 7" deep (18 x 54 x 18 cm).
